Your Questions About John Derry

Written by Timo on May 26, 2011 – 10:06 pm -

Michael asks…

John Tait and Mary Campbell (of Derry Ireland?)?

I’m looking for John Tait and his wife Mary Campbell born around the early 19th Century around Derry Ireland. The dates of their births and their parents names are unknown to me and that is what I’m looking for. If anyone can be of help it would be appreciated.

Timo answers:

Online searchable records for Derry/Londonderry will be going online in due course at:

http://www.brsgenealogy.ie .

Each search is priced at 5 Euros, so the cost of finding either of these people could soon mount up. You really need to get some approximate idea of their dates of birth to help narrow down the records you look at.

You also need to narrow down their location in Ireland. What you are after, ideally, is a townland ie place of origin. This website has helpful (free) advice about how to do this:

http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-ancestry.html .

There are no census records for Ireland (except for a few fragments) prior to the 1901 census. A census substitute is Griffiths Valuation which was carried out in Derry in 1858-59, and probably too late to be of help to you, but can be searched (for free) at:

http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php .

The Derry Historical Society (www.derryhistory.org) may also be of help to you.

I hope this helps. Good luck in your search.

Rebel.

Richard asks…

Does anyone know how to get in touch with JOHN PAUL MOORE Of Derry, Northern Ireland?

He was living in New York with my family and he grew up in Shantallow (sp?). He is the 4th or 5th child and has 2 younger siblings. He is about 28 or so now. Please help me. His parents are dicorced and his mother’s name is Eileen and his dad is Joe. He has a brother Joe, and Daniel, sisters are: Margaret, Eileen, Lisa and Donna…there’s another one, but I forgot her name.

Timo answers:

Try the Northern Ireland phonebook

Search for “Moore” in the town of Londonderry, as the Brits like to call it and start with the initial A, otherwise it will return too many results. Keep going through all the Moores you may come across the town name Shantallow (your spelling is correct). Good luck! Here is a link

Jenny asks…

Derry City fan here – John Robertson. A good move or not?

Timo answers:

Donna asks…

Your Questions About Corel Painter Sketch Pad

Written by Timo on May 26, 2011 – 10:05 am -

Thomas asks…

Autodesk SketchBook Express 2010 vs. Corel Painter Sketch Pad- What’s better?

I’m installing my new graphics tablet, a Wacom Intuos4. With it I get two free downloads, my options are Adobe Photoshop Elements, Autodesk SketchBook 2010, and Corel Painter Sketch Pad. I’ve already decided to go for Photoshop, but I can’t decide between Corel and Autodesk. I’ve read great things about both programs, so I’d like to hear some other people’s preferences. Thank You!

Timo answers:

Well i have painter 11 and its an ablolutly amazing program. Im not sure about sketchpad though. I would go with painter sketchpad due to the fact that autodesk isnt focused on developing programs for digital art but more for cad and 3d. I bought 3ds max 2010 and autocad 2010 and there excelent programs but there sketch pad isnt near as good as painter.

Robert asks…

Corel Painter Sketch Pad… Uploading to deviantart?

I just got a tablet and I was wondering how do I upload art from Corel Painter Sketch Pad to Deviant Art? All answers WELCOME!

Timo answers:

You can save the page out from Sketch Pad as a jpg or PNG then upload it to DeviantArt.

You can save a page with the ‘export page’ button (Third on in the top bar)

hope this helps

steve

Lisa asks…

Photoshop Elements 7, Corel Sketch Pad, or Autodesk SketchBook Express 2010?

I’m buying an Intuos4 with Corel Painter 11. The site that I’m buying from also offers the above 3 programs (of which I can pick two) for free with my purchase. My question is… which do I get? I definately want the Corel sketchpad, I’ve heard many good things about it. I’ve also heard good things about Sketchbook Express. But would it be redundant to get two sketch programs? I’ve also heard that Elements is rather slow and not too terribly good. I already own a copy of Photoshop 6, so should I risk getting Elements?
Help!

Timo answers:

Definitely one of the sketch apps. Sketch Pad will sync with Painter. My experience with Elements has been good. The newer versions are huge and open more slowly than previous versions but, once opened, they work really well. I’m inclined to recommend you get Elements 7 for a couple of reasons. PS 6 is a very old program that’s no longer supported by Adobe. If you want to download and use any of the newer brushes, plugins or actions developed for Elements or Photoshop, you’ll need the newer program (the program’s coding changed with PS7 and PS CS). Elements 7 has also made it easy to install actions – for a change;-) It has a lot more functionality than previous Elements versions. And both Photoshop and Elements have introduced Smart Objects and Smart Brushes that the older versions lacked. You don’t have to uninstall PS6 when you install Elements so, if you need to, you can always go back to it to do things that Elements might not do – like vector graphics.

David asks…

Best drawing program for sketching?

I have the wacom intuos 4, and am currently playing around with programs such as Photoshop Elements, Sketchbook Express, and Corel Painter Sketch Pad, which came free with the pad. They are very nice and easy to use, but I would like something with a larger selection of sketching tools and programs with better brush sensitivity.

What would you recommend I use for sketching, flash, and cartooning?

Timo answers:

Try GIMP it is open source freeware. There are tutorials for users.
It is the download site:
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Michael asks…

I’m choosing a drawing software but i don’t know what to choose?

Ok they me gave this list
Adobe Photoshop Elements 8
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6
Autodesk SketchBook Express 2010
Corel Painter Sketch Pad

But which one is the best out of all of them? But wat is the Photoshop used for basically? Should I get two, like the Corel Painter and the Photoshop Element 8 for drawings? or only the Corel Painter? Because I just want to draw and be creative.

Timo answers:

Get Corel Painter, 12 is the new version and it just came out weeks ago.

Your Questions About Corel Painter 12

Written by Timo on May 25, 2011 – 10:05 pm -

David asks…

Corel Painter?

Is this software all that it says it is? Does it do a good job?

Is the WACOM INTUOS3 9 X 12 GRAPHIC TABLET a good buy?

Thanks

Timo answers:

Wacom tablets are good products. I have used them for many years with PhotoShop.

I have no experience with Corel Painter, no doubt it will do all it says it does, but the examples they show are being done by professionals with lots of experience that get paid lots of money to create the images just to show off all the bling.

Ruth asks…

Corel Painter X?

Is this software all that it says it is? Does it do a good job?

Is the WACOM INTUOS3 9 X 12 GRAPHIC TABLET a good buy?

Timo answers:

Wacoms are always good buys. The size depends on what you will be using it for but I always recommand people to buy from wacom.
I dont use Corel so cant help you on that.

Sandy asks…

My computer’s acting weird?

Do I have a potential virus? If so, how do I fix it? Here are the computer’s symptoms:

~frozen screens, though other windows still function
~difficulty running more than three applications at a time
~files that appear to be “zipped” or “corrupted” and do not open
~extreme difficulty opening up my documents
~frequent error messages
~my files appear to be unresponsive and, though they have never been deleted, claim to say that they were
~my computer’s virus scanner continually says that nothing’s wrong even as the computer worsens

Some things that I downloaded were a “Wild Words” font, PhotoFiltre (english), Manga Studio 4.0, Corel Painter, PhotoImpact 12, and some other applications. Most of them came from CDs that I used to install a drawing tablet. I also download the newest versions of Mozilla Firefox when I am told to.

Can you please tell me how to fix up my computer? I have a LOT of information on there that cannot be replaced!

Timo answers:

This is probably a virus with a rootkit on your computer hiding the virus from your anti-virus program. Here’s some suggestions. Since your computer may be severely infected, you should take some extra safety measures.

1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode with Networking by pressing F8 while your computer is loading, and then selecting Safe Mode with Networking when prompted.

2. Once loaded, go to http://www.malwarebytes.org and install the free version of malwarebytes.

3. Once installed, update the program to the latest database.

4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode, by pressing F8 while it is loading, and selecting Safe Mode when prompted.

5. Once loaded, open Malwarebytes, and run a quick scan. Quarantine any threats it finds.

6. Run a full scan and quarantine any threats it finds.

7. Reboot your computer into it’s regular mode. You do not need to press F8.

8. Repeat steps 5 and 6.

Hope this helps!

Art software for windows?

I had a look at Corel painter 11 but this is not only very expensive but also too complicated and Professional, does anyone no of some child friendly software i can buy for her?

Timo answers:

ArtRage is quite good, from experience, and it offers a free trial if you want to see what the product is like. Unlike Painter, however, it doesn’t provide a more digital painting experience, but rather tries to recreate physical, traditional mediums in a digital form. It provides a simple, ergonomically designed layout, and includes features such as Glitter and Stencils as well as Pencil and Oil Paints.

I would recommend it for your daughter, as I have used it and found it to be quite good, though Photoshop and painter are my programs of choice. The program varies from between $20 to $80 depending on what features you want to include (if you want to upgrade from the free starter edition), but overall that is much cheaper than most other, more popular programs.

Your Questions About High Resolution Photos Facebook

Written by Timo on May 23, 2011 – 6:05 am -

Richard asks…

How can I share hi-res photos?

I’m looking for a way to share hi-res photos (preferably for free or very cheaply) online. The resolution on Facebook etc is not high enough as the photos being sent need to be printed on to large canvases.

Timo answers:

Your terminology is making your question confusing. What do you mean by SHARE? If you literally mean to post many hi res photos to share for other people to see and print, you are going to have to use a paid account at what is called a photo / client hosting site. These sites allow you to upload hi res photos, then any potential clients / friends can view the photos and order large prints through the site. The photos are still not going to be hi res on the computer, which you should not want anyway. You cannot view a hi res photo on a computer screen without scrolling all over the screen and only being able to see parts of the photo.

Zenfolio is a great site for this type of service:

http://www.zenfolio.com

Now if you are meaning you just want to be able to SEND a hi res photo to someone, then there are plenty of FTP sites you can use for this. Many email services will not allow large attachments, and that is simply a slow, poor way to send large photos. Using a site such as You Send It allows you to upload large files to the site, then the site sends an email to your client. The client then opens the attachment in the email which redirects to You Send It to retrieve the file and download it onto their computer. MUCH better than trying to tie up email with large files.

Nancy asks…

Is there a way to force a jpg file to open within the browser (if it opens as a download dialog)?

For example I’m in Facebook and I want to view a high resolution photo but when I click “download high resolution photo” it opens a download dialog. I know it’s meant to do that and that’s why it says download.

But is there a way where I can force it to open the image within the browser without actually downloading it, perhaps by a Adblock script?

Thanks!

Timo answers:

AdBlock has nothing to do with the way your .jpgs are opened. It depends on which browser youre using. If you use Firefox, youre in luck. Go to Tools – Options or Preferences, and go to content. There should be an option to change what your browser does with every type of file extension.

If you use Internet Explorer, youre out of luck. If you right click on the image it gives you all the options you have of opening the image. If its not there, then IE wont be able to do it.

Carol asks…

Is there an easier way to send photos to someone rather than through email?

I need a way to send someone 200+ high resolution photographs and I dread sending them via email.. Does anyone know a better way to transfer them that doesn’t involve posting them to Facebook? Is there any type of website that will host the album and allow for the entire thing to be downloaded as a whole?

Timo answers:

Facebook will not store the files in high resolution. Flickr will allow batch upload and individual download, but would require a Pro account for that many high res images. Anything involving email is too slow and runs the risk of files getting dumped for exceeding capacity.

If you have FTP access to a server, that is the way to do it. Most pros have high capacity/high band width storage servers, or at least a Web server, that is used for FTP transfer to clients. You could probably rent a server short term for a reasonable price, $7 per month 150G unlimited bandwidth at Go Daddy. Search Google, maybe there are some free ones.

David asks…

Facebook Uploading Problem?

So I’m currently uploading 125 photos to my Facebook and so far, 82 of them are done and with 14 minutes to go. However, this 14 minutes have been an hour and a bit long and I’ve tried to cancel it but it says it would delete all the uploaded photos. I’ve already wasted 500 meg due to high resolution pictures and I don’t want to start over.

Help would be appreciated! thank you!!

Timo answers:

The exact same thing happened to me except I was uploading a video at the time I was using one of those mobile broadband sticks and when I went back to the WiFi in my house and it uploaded fine so if you’re using a slow connection that can really affect how long it takes to upload photos and videos :-)

Susan asks…

Can Photographers Answer This For Me?

My friend sent me photos as JPEG email attachments for me to tweak the coloring and contrast on, and then upload onto my facebook page. So I right clicked on each photo attached, selected “Save As” and saved them into my photos in my Windows Photo Gallery. I then went to open the photos I saved there and to edit the coloring and contrast, and realized the photos she sent me don’t take up the whole screen like they do if I’d uploaded them from a camera card, and when i try to zoom in on them, they pixellate and the quality is horrible.

My question is, what does she have to do when she sends them, and/or what do I have to do when I retrieve them, for them to open up as full size, high resolution photos in my Windows Gallery when i go to edit them, like the photos I upload from my camera card? Thanks.

Timo answers:

You don’t have do “do” anything but save the file, you can only save a file at whatever resolution it is, there is no choice to download them at different resolutions. She has to send the full res file in the attachment. She sent you low res files, probably because most of the time, email attachments are limited to no more than 10mb files. Maybe she re-sized them so that she could send them all within her email clients attachment quota, or maybe she has her camera set to capture images at a lower res, I don’t know and can’t suggest a solution without first knowing under which circumstances the images were created originally. What I can do is recommend you advise her to upload her images to picasaweb, set her permissions to allow download, and for you to retrieve the images from her picasaweb page instead of her emailing them to you. I gave picasaweb as an example, because I use it to allow folks in my family to easily download images I take of them, but you could use flickr to do this as well. I don’t use my flickr for that purpose.
